Significant Accomplishments October 2002- November 2003 o Orlando Citizen Corps Councils formed, 50 citizens from a cross section of the community, provide advice and leadership to the Citizen Corps initiative. Members serve on either the marketing or recruitment committee. o Launch of Orlando Citizen Corps website page: www.cityoforlando.net. More than 50 citizens registered on the Citizen Corps website to receive information about Orlando Citizen Corps initiative and its programs. o Over 600 citizens trained in one or more of Orlando Citizen Corps training courses from September 2002- July 2003. Citizen Corps training courses include Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and Senior CERT, Citizen Fire Academy, Citizens for Neighborhood Watch, Citizen Police Academy and Citizen Observer Program. o $1.2 million dollars in grants secured from the Corporation for National and Community Service, plus an additional $17,802 from the State of Florida. o Citizen Corps: Orlando Training Opportunities brochure published, and over 25,000 copies distributed to date. Additionally, more than 5,000 How Should Orlando Prepare for Terrorism brochures have been distributed. o In partnership with RSVP, the City of Orlando is reaching out to senior citizens. A Senior CERT program has been developed to teach seniors self-survival during an emergency, first aid techniques and fire suppression activities. More than 150 seniors have graduated from this program. o Are You Ready? A Guide to Citizen Preparedness distributed to 200 Neighborhood Watch Block Captains, Citizen Corps Council members, and citizens. o The SeniorLinks program is working with 8 neighborhoods to identify and establish regular contact with isolated seniors in the neighborhoods. 100 First Aid Kits and information on senior services have been distributed through this program. o Citizen Corps Council developed a “Strategic Plan for Volunteer Involvement” and assisted with numerous marketing and recruitment activities. o Recognized nationally as one of the top ten Citizen Corps initiatives in the United States o Hosted a recognition event for Citizen Corps participants o Designed a neighborhood disaster plan template and identified numerous neighborhoods to begin their planning process
