What is AmeriCorps?? The Corporation for National and Community Service provides opportunities for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to serve their communities and country through AmeriCorps. The Virginia Commission for National & Community Service falls under the guidance of the Corporation for National and Community Service and funds agencies and nonprofit organizations throughout the Commonwealth. Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the Corporation has made funding available to organizations whose focus includes homeland security. An AmeriCorps program consists of a team of volunteers set up within an organization who commit to a year of part-time or full-time service. For their service to their community, members, or volunteers, receive a monthly living allowance and are eligible for an education award at the end of their service term.
