2010 National Achievement Award Winner
Between January 1, 2009 and May 17, 2010, the Washoe County Citizens Homeland Security Council completed 13 volunteer academies, 55 community outreach events, 87 interagency outreach and support activities, 45 in-service volunteer and community trainings, 120 Citizen Corps Team meetings, 35 non-emergency activations, and 14 emergency activations. The number of trained volunteers in the community has greatly increased, as has the number of active volunteers. Over 14,000 volunteer hours were logged, and thousands of preparedness guides were distributed to the community. Many new teams have been established under this Council, including an Animal Rescue team, multiple Campus CERT programs, a Terrorist Liaison Officer Volunteer Corps, and a group to assist with Airport Security Training and Testing. The Council also played a big role in the H1N1 outbreak, as well as a wild land fire evacuation exercise. The Washoe County Council collaborated and cooperated with many groups in these activities, including the Washoe County Sherriff's Office, Washoe County Search and Rescue, the Nevada Department of Education, Northern Nevada Red Cross, Neighborhood Watch, the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority, and many others.
