Citizen Corps Council of North Idaho

2010 National Achievement Award Winner

The Citizen Corps Council of North Idaho is comprised of five counties and two tribes located in northern Idaho, a large rural area where individuals can be left isolated within their communities or homes during times of disasters and emergencies. Six percent of Idaho's one million residents live in this region, with many living in remote areas. The area’s counties came together to create educational tools used to teach citizens, private sector businesses, local government officials, and representatives from other county and tribal governments to plan, prepare, and sustain themselves through emergency and disaster situations.

The Council developed "Preparedness Manuals" for each of the counties and tribes that can be checked out by volunteer members of the Speakers Bureau to give public presentations on preparedness. The manual includes eight sections with teachable segments that walk the volunteer through the selected presentation. Speakers have reached hundreds of citizens via community meetings and events. In addition, the Council has supported Coeur d'Alene Tribal Police Reserves and Citizens Academies, and distributed preparedness tote bags, Coeur d'Alene Fire Corps and Medical Reserve Corps educational supplies at presentations.  The Council also works to engage and educate local residents in order to create community resilience and reduce the burden placed on first responders during a disaster.
