New Lenox Citizen Corps

2010 National Achievement Award Winner

The New Lenox Citizen Corps Council was adopted by resolution on May 18, 2009 and held its first meeting on June 24, 2009.  One of their primary goals is to ensure that the residents of New Lenox are prepared for emergencies and disasters. To accomplish this goal, several educational programs were researched and evaluated.  The Council determined that implementing CERT would provide the greatest benefit to the community.  Ninety residents attended the Council's informational meeting (held in coordination with the New Lenox Police Department).  By the third CERT class, the New Lenox CERT program reached 118 members.  The Council and CERT have participated in numerous community events and trainings to promote preparedness and the Special Needs Registry. New Lenox has become a leader in safety and preparedness and recently received designations as a “Safe Community” through the World Health Organization and the National Safety Council, and as a “Storm Ready Community” through the National Weather Service.
