2010 National Achievement Award Winner
Serve DC and DC Citizen Corps aim to build on the civic philanthropy of District residents by creating opportunities for individuals to volunteer through one of the many DC Citizen Corps disaster training programs. The Council brings together local leaders, citizen volunteers, and a network of first responder organizations, including fire departments, police departments, and emergency medical personnel, to increase community involvement in emergency preparedness and response. Serve DC mobilized 1,404 volunteers to assist during the 2009 presidential inauguration; set up volunteer reception areas, managed spontaneous volunteers; assisted with family reunification; recruited 31 volunteers to assist an overwhelmed call center during the June 2009 Metro rail crash; recruited 989 volunteers to support the DC Department of Health administer 25,000 doses of the H1N1 vaccine at 52 clinics throughout the city; coordinated a four-day donation collection for Haiti earthquake relief, resulting in 833 volunteers sorting and packing more than 3,000 boxes of donations; assisted with the District-wide effort to expand snow-removal assistance to the walkways of 23 DC Public Schools and 170 residences of seniors and individuals with functional and access needs during the 2010 snow storm; and assisted DC government agencies during the 2010 Nuclear Security Summit to accommodate and assist visiting dignitaries, conference attendees, and the public, as well as ensure as little disruption as possible to municipal services and infrastructure. In addition, Serve DC was able to engage more than 35,000 residents and train 5,655 volunteers in 2009.
