East Baton Rouge Parish Citizen Corps Council

2010 National Achievement Award Winner

The overall goal of the East Baton Rouge Parish Citizen Corps Council is to provide comprehensive public safety programs to mitigate the effects of any disaster, natural or man-made. To fulfill this goal, the Council developed the RedStick Ready campaign (Baton Rouge is French for Red Stick), to coordinate messages with the national Ready campaign and build community pride.  Since January 1, 2009, the Council has attended over 100 area-wide public events such as National Night Out Against Crime, the Pennington Balloon Championship, and Louisiana State University football games. They have also sponsored and planned RedStick Ready Day, which will be held in the summer of 2010.  The Council has produced RedStick Ready TV, a 30-minute monthly public education program, posted online and distributed throughout the community.  In the summer of 2009, Jr. CERT reached over 2,000 children (ages 4-18) in surrounding areas through schools, community and faith-based organizations, and other programs.  Jr. CERT partners closely with the Baton Rouge Fire Department, the Baton Rouge Police Department, and Channel 9 WAFB.  The Council is now in the process of implementing a Business Emergency Response Team (BERT), designed to prepare small and large businesses and their employees in the event of a disaster or emergency.
